Promotion Opportunities

From Police Officer To Corporal or Detective

After one year of service, Police Officers are eligible to apply for the Corporal or Detective examination.

The test for Corporal and Detective ranks is a written multiple choice examination lasting 2 to 3 hours. Part of the scoring is based on seniority.

When open test dates are announced, interested Police Officers complete an application requesstin to be considered for promotion. At that time, information and books to study for the test will be provided.

Promoted  Police Officer  receive a 10% pay raise.

Position Responsibilities 

  • A Corporal in the Philadelphia Police Department is in charge of the Police District's Operation Room or Special Unit's Operations Room. Corporals are responsible for all equipment, police reports, messages (in or out of the district or unit), and other administrative duties.
  • A Detective is responsible for the investigation of crimes, i.e. robberies, assaults, burglaries, homicides, etc. They are also responsible for the preparation of all police forms used during the investigation of a crime, i.e. arrest reports, investigation reports, search warrants, computer messages.

From Officer, Corporal or Detective to Sergeant

After two years of service, Police Officers are eligible to apply for the Sergeant examination.

The test for Sergeant rank is a written multiple choice examination lasting 2 to 3 hours. Part of the scoring is based on seniority.

When open test dates are announced, interested Police Officers complete an application requesstin to be considered for promotion. At that time, information and books to study for the test will be provided.

Promoted Police Officers receive a 14% pay raise.

Position Responsibilities

  • A Sergeant in the Philadelphia Police Department is responsible for the police district's street operations, or  oversee the detective division's operations.
  • At times a sergeant will be in charge of a district's operations room.

Higher Rank Advancement

Officers may seek advancement to the higher ranks of Lieutenant, Captain, Inspector, etc later in their police career. The benefits also differ when you obtain the rank of Captain and above.
